Destination Elevation: 11,780 feet
Elevation Gain (one way): 1142 feet   (What's This?)
Distance (one way): 4.1 miles
Difficulty Index (one way): 5.9   (What's This?)

The hike follows a portion of the Old UTE trail, a trail used long ago by the Ute and Arapaho Indians.  This portion of the Ute trail was also the old route used by auto traffic between 1918-1932.  Not far from trailhead you'll find interesting rock outcroppings and extraordinary pinnacles of rock.  About mid way, you'll reach Forest Canyon Pass.  From there look right down into Forest Canyon, where you'll see the headwaters of the Big Thompson River.  15,000 years ago, Forest Canyon held the longest Glacier on the east side of the park, 13 miles long.  To the left you'll see the Never Summer Range, known as Ni-che-be-chii by the Arapaho.  The remainder of the hike is a stroll across the tundra to the Alpine Visitor Center.
